January 2019

The Garcia Lab welcomes our new BMB rotation students Kollin Schultz and Michael Gilbert to the group.

Collaborative studies with the Zaret lab (UPenn) on the role of heterochromatin during lineage commitment, and with the Wellen lab (UPenn) on the role of acetyl-CoA metabolism in pancreatic cancer are published in Science, and Cancer Discovery, respectively.

December 2018

Hee Jong has has been awarded an NIH Chemistry-Biology Interface graduate training fellowship, well done!

A collaborative manuscript with the Pierce lab (UPenn) to understand epigenetic mechanisms behind transgenerational cocaine addiction and behavioral consequences is published in the European Journal of Neuroscience.

The Garcia Lab says goodbye to Ranran, who will be starting a new position at MD Anderson in Houston, best of luck!

The Garcia Lab had the annual Holiday Party with food, games and a gift exchange. Bhanu won the best “ugliest” sweater contest, although there were several top contenders.

Sam’s preprint of his nucleics acids search enginine computaitonal platform is picking up by the Proteomics News BlogSpot.

The Garcia Lab participates in the Chemistry-Biology Interface Symposium. Simone gave a talk, and several members gave posters including Joe who won second place for his poster presentation.

Dylan and John’s review on cancer epigenetics is published in Expert Review in Proteomics.

Stephanie is awarded a Michael S. Brown Penn-GSK Postdoctoral Fellowship, congrats!

November 2018

Ben returns from BGS graduate student recruiting at the ABRCMS conference in Indianapolis. Former Garcia Lab summer student Nia Harmon gave an excellent talk.

The Garcia Lab returns from the Department/BMB graduate program retreat at the Poconos Mountains. We had several poster presentations (Josue, Yekaterina, Sam, Kevin, Richard, Mariel C, Mariel M, Dylan and Laura). Mariel C won second place in the poster competition and Ben defended his “Student Outreach” award title.

Anumita, Geoff and Jen present at the annual Biomedical Postdoctoral Research Symposium on campus, nice work!

Collaborations with the Kashina lab (UPenn) on the human arginylome, and with the Berger lab on histone modifications changes in clinically abnormal sperm are published in Scientific Reports, and the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, respectively.

The Garcia Lab says goodbye to Mariana Lopes, our visiting graduate student who will be going back to Brazil to finish her PhD studies.

Ben is named the John McCrea Dickson M.D. Presidential Professor.

Kelly’s manuscript describing  Top and Middle Down Hydrogen-Deuterium exchange MS approaches for probing nucleosomal conformation is published in Structure.

Ben participates in a Panel Discussion on the past, present and future of quantitative proteomics for the ProteomicsNOW MS Virtual Event (www.proteomicsnow.com) sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific and Wiley Publishing.

Our collaboration with the Greenberg Lab describing the effect of phosphorylation on TIP60 during DNA damage is published in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

The Garcia Lab returns from a great experience at the HUPO 2018 conference in Orlando, FL. We had multiple poster presentations from the lab (Kasia, Jen, Josue, John, Dylan, Kevin, Mariel M, Amber, Joe, Yekaterina, Bhanu, Peder and Geoff). Amber was also chosen as one of 8 Finalists for the PhD Poster Competition, where she gave a 3 min short talk on her work. Later she was selected as one of the 3 winners of the competition!  Laura, Mariel and Ben gave talks, and Yekaterina won a travel award. Overall, it was a fantastic conference and fun time.

September 2018

Collaboration with the Locasale lab (Duke) to understand acetate production from glucose is published in Cell.

Congratulations to Simone, who has accepted an offer to start his own lab at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine!

Our collaborative work with the Strome lab (UC Santa Cruz) to understand epigenetic memory and transmission of histone H3K36 methylation is published in Genetics.

Mariel M has been awarded an NIH Diversity Supplement grant award from the National Cancer Institute, congrats!

The Garcia lab welcomes Janice Reynaga and Neha Srikumar (both BMB graduate students) to the lab for the fall rotation.

August 2018

Yekaterina has been selected receive a travel award to present her work at the 2018 HUPO World Congress next month, congrats.

The Garcia Lab has a fun time at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics picnic. Kevin, Laura, Simone, Bella, Alina and Ben even helped the department team (“RNAces”) beat the Physiology department in the big softball game 4-3 (Bella even knocked in the winning run!).

Amber has been named a finalist for the PhD Poster Competition at next month’s World HUPO Congress. She will give a short presentation and compete against 7 other finalists, read here. Good luck!

The Garcia Lab says goodbye to Dr. Kelly Karch, who will travel the world before moving onto a postdoc position.

The Garcia Lab has their annual Summer Lab Party. It was a really good time, lots of food (histone salad and nucleosome cake) and sports activities. Congratulations to Kevin and Simone (“Kev-mone”) for overcoming their differences and coming together to win the Wii Boxing Tournament!

Mariel C presented a poster on her work at the first annual Office of Research and Diversity Training Research Symposium here on campus.

Amber’s NIH F31 NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship is funded by the National Cancer Institute, congratulations!

Excited to announce that John Wojcik has officially started as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine here at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Congratulations John, and looking forward to big things in the future from your new lab!

Ben and Donita Brady (Cancer Biology) are interviewed to discuss the Presidential Professorship and diversity in science by UPenn’s Office of Inclusion and Diversity (OID). This interview was included in the OID Annual Report (Page 7) which can be read here.

Hendrik Weisser from STORM Therapeutics visits the Garcia Lab and gives a seminar on the latest in RNA modifications analysis for therapeutic use.

The Garcia Lab returns from a fun and very successful ASMS Conference, where Anumita, Congcong and Simone gave great talks; and Sam, Richard, Ranran, Minghui, Mariana and Zuo-Fei presented posters. Our previous MCP article “A novel quantitative mass spectrometry platform for determining protein O-GlcNAcylation dynamics,” has been selected to appear in a special virtual JBC issue of ASBMB journals  focusing on “Omics of lipids, glycans and polar metabolites.”

Zuo-Fei’s EpiProfile 2.0 manuscript is published in the Journal of Proteome Research, and our collaboration with the Eckenhoff lab to identify propofol binding sites on kinesin is published in JBC, congrats!

The Garcia Lab hosts the First Annual BMB 500 racing competition for the BMB graduate program. Mariel M and Mariel C finished 8th and 4th, respectively. Nice job!

Lucy graduates from Penn, congrats! Next stop some traveling and then onto medical school.

Additionally, Kasia’s collaboration with the Witze lab (UPenn) on Wnt signaling promotion of melanoma is published in Elife, and a collaboration with th4e Reinberg lab (NYU) on PRC2 activity is published in Molecular Cell.
