May 2017

Kevin presents a poster on his RNA MS work at the RNA Biology & Cancer Symposium here at Penn.

Simone returns from representing the lab in collaborator meetings at the Broad Institute and at the Instituto Butantan in São Paulo, Brazil.

Ben participates in a virtual meeting to kickoff the International Partnership between Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) in Munich and the Penn Epigenetics Institute.

The Garcia Lab says goodbye to Qi, who will take a year off before coming back to begin graduate school at Penn. Good luck and see you again soon!

Kevin has received a travel award from the Delaware Valley Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group to attend the American Society for Mass Spectrometry Conference next month, congrats!

Our collaborative work with the Wysocka lab (Stanford University) on MLL3/MLL4 H3K4me1 independent function is published in Molecular Cell, while a collaboration with the Martinez lab (UT Southwestern) on JumonjiC inhibitors as therapeutic treatments for non-small cell lung cancer is published in Cell Reports. Another collaboration with the Morrisey Lab (UPenn) examining how lncRNA transcription factor interactions regulate tissue development is published in Genes and Development.

Mariel’s review article on investigating proteolytic cleavage by mass spectrometry is published in Expert Review of Proteomics, nice work!

The Garcia Lab welcomes first-year BMB graduate student Richard Lauman to the group for a Spring rotation.

The Garcia Lab is awarded a PennCHOP Microbiome Program pilot grant to fund studies into the crosstalk between the gut microbiome and host epigenetic mechanisms. Big props to Peder, who did all the heavy lifting on the proposal. Congrats!

Yekaterina Kori has officially joined the lab for her graduate thesis work, welcome aboard!

The Garcia Lab welcomes our new Technical Director Hyoungjoo Lee and new postdoctoral researcher Josue Baeza (who has been awarded a Penn  Academic Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship) to the group.

Congratulations to Qi, who has accepted the offer to join the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics graduate program here at Penn for her PhD studies!

Collaborations with the Birkholtz lab to map the histone PTMs changes during the malaria parasite life cycle is published in Scientific Reports., while other collaborations to characterize epigenome alterations in melanoma, and to identify RNA-protein interactions critical for root hair cell development in Arabidopsis thaliana are published in Cell Reports and Developmental Cell, respectively.

Shu’s research publication “Preferential Phosphorylation on Old Histones during Early Mitosis in Human Cells” was selected as a “Highlight of 2016″ for the Journal of Biological Chemistry!

The Garcia Lab attends the Epigenetics Institute party to celebrate the elevation of the program to Institute status at Penn. Congrats!

The Garcia Lab returns from the 13th annual US HUPO Conference. Dylan, Mariel, Amber, Simone, Yekaterina, Kasia, Peder and Kevin all gave lightning talks, Ranran gave a short talk, and Ben also gave a talk and led an evening workshop. We also had 10 poster presentations as well. Dylan and Yekaterina were awarded student travel awards to attend the conference, and Mariel won first place in the poster competition!

The Garcia Lab welcomes Abigail Lemmon our new undergraduate researcher to the group.

Our collaborative project with the Kutateladze lab (University of Colorado School of Medicine) on understanding recognition of histone crotonyl modifications by the monocytic leukemia zinc-finger protein-related factor (MORF) is published in Structure. Another collaboration with the Eckenhoff lab (Penn) on investigating the mechanisms of  inhaled general anesthetics is published in ACS Chemical Biology.

Ben returns from representing the US HUPO organization at FASEB’s Capitol Hill Day, where he spoke to congress about the importance of continued funding of scientific research.

Garcia Lab has 19 presentations (13 poster and 6 oral) accepted for the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) conference in Indianapolis in June.

Incoming postdoc Josue Baeza has been awarded a Penn  Academic Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship, congrats!

Amber wins a poster award at the annual CHOP Research Poster Day competition. Congrats!

The Garcia Lab welcomes new postdoc Anumita Saha to the group.

Several lab papers are published. Kevin’s  paper on epigenetics and systems biology is published in Methods in Enzymology, Simone’s collaborative work with the Hummon lab (Norte Dame) to identify drug induced histone PTM  changes in a 3D-tumor model is published in Analytical Chemistry, and another paper with the Pierce lab to understand cocaine induced epigenome reprogramming is published in Molecular Psychiatry (also check out the Press Release). Lastly, Kasia’s manuscript on systems-wide cellular changes during herpes virus infection is published in Molecular and Cellular Proteomics, congrats to everyone!

The Garcia Lab is excited to hear that our multi-lab grant “THUNDER: Tolerant Hosts Using Novel Drug-Enhanced Resilience” has been funded by DARPA.

The Garcia Lab had their annual holiday party. It was a great time with good food, and a fun interesting gift exchange.

Kevin and Dylan present their research work at the Neuroepigenetics Symposium here at Penn, nice job!

The Garcia Lab is thrilled to hear that the Penn Epigenetics Program has now been elevated to the Penn Epigenetics Institute!

Collaborative work with the Moghe lab (Rutgers University) describing histone modifications indicative of cell transitional states is published in Science Reports, while another collaborative study with the Jabado lab (McGill University) focused on understanding the role of histone H3K36M mutations in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas is published in Nature Genetics.

Dylan has been accepted into the ITMAT Certificate Program in Translational Science, and has also received a CTSA award, congrats!

Ben was profiled in an ASBMB “Research Spotlight”.

December 2016

Ben has been promoted to Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

The Garcia Lab returns from a productive P01 Oncohistone grant team meeting at Rockefeller University, where Dylan and Ben presented the latest results.

The Garcia Lab says goodbye to Johayra, who will be moving onto her new position at Absorption Systems Panama, best of luck!

Collaborative work with the Kohli lab (Penn) on TET2 mutants that favor production of specific oxidized methylation products is published in Nature Chemical Biology,  a study focused on understanding the cell-cycle control of CENP-A assembly in Molecular Cell, and our viewpoint on the proteomics field is published in the Journal of Cell Biology.

November 2016

Our collaborative study to investigate epigenetic modification patterns in a specific pediatric brain tumor (ependymomas) with the Venneti lab is published in Science Translational Medicine.

The Garcia Lab comes back from the annual Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Department Retreat. We had several posters from Ranran, Peder, Kelly, Mariel, Dylan, Sam, Kevin and Amber, and a talk by Ben.

Amber presented her research progress at the GCB Chalk Talks, nice job.

Lab method papers on enrichment of non-histone lysine methylated peptides by XJ, and combinatorial analysis of histone PTMs by Simone are  published in Current Protocols in Protein Science, and Methods in Molecular Biology respectively, congrats.

The Garcia Lab welcomes Visiting Professor Julia Pinheiro Chagas Da Cunha (Instituto Butantan, Brazil) for a 3 week stay in the lab.

Our lab’s collaborative studies are published in Molecular Cell. Simone’s work with the Bonasio Lab to map RNA-protein interaction domains, and an investigation with the Allis Lab (Rockefeller University) to understand cellular signaling and chromatin cross-talk during inflammatory stress response.

The Garcia Lab says goodbye to Yumiao, who will be moving to San Diego for the next phase of her career and life, congrats.

Peder presented a poster at the Microbiome Symposium here on campus, nice work.

The Garcia Lab was well represented at the SACNAS National Conference in Long Beach, CA.  Mariel and Laura presented posters and Johayra gave a talk.

Mariel, Kelly, Peder, Ranran and Laura (Team MasSpectacular) completed a 10K run, great job!

Ben is elected to the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) governing council (Western Region representative) for a three year term starting January 2017 to December 2019.

The Garcia Lab welcomes first-year BMB graduate student Mariel Mendoza to the group for the fall rotation.

The Garcia Lab welcomes Penn Biotechnology graduate student Dara Hawthorne to the lab for her fall independent study course.

Mariel, Johayra and Laura have all been awarded travel fellowships to present their research work at the SACNAS National Conference in October. Congrats everyone!

The Garcia Lab had a fun time at the annual Summer Party. Congratulations to Johayra for taking the Gold Medal in the Bocce Ball Tournament, followed by Simone with the Silver, and Erica and Amber tying for Bronze.

Kelly’s comprehensive protocol paper on histone proteomics methods is published in Methods in Enzymology.
