Creating the Continuously Learning Medical Education System

Marc M. Triola, MD, FACP, is the associate dean for educational informatics and an associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, where he is also the founding director of the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education (IIME). His research focuses on the disruptive effects of the present revolution in medical education, driven by technological advances, big data and learning analytics. He has worked to create a continuously learning medical education system that includes computer-based learning tools and new ways to integrate electronic data into educational research. Dr. Triola and IIME have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, including the Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems (IAIMS) Awards program, the National Science Foundation Advanced Learning Technologies program, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education and the American Medical Association’s Accelerating Change in Medical Education program.

Breaking the Mold: Transformation as a Call for Scholarly Action

LuAnn Wilkerson, EdD, is associate dean for evaluation and faculty development and professor of medical education at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, where her responsibilities include program evaluation, assessment of learning and enhancement of teaching capacities across the medical education continuum. Her educational research interests include assessment of clinical performance, problem-based learning and the evaluation of outcomes of curricular innovations. She is regularly involved in facilitating faculty development workshops on enhancing teaching, learning and assessment as well as mentoring individual faculty members in building careers as medical educators.

Since completing her doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Ms. Wilkerson has become a national leader in medical education, serving elected roles in the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the American Educational Research Association. Through her publications, presentations and workshops, she has assisted hundreds of medical school faculty members in the study and improvement of teaching and learning with a special focus on the challenges of clinical teaching, the implementation of learner-centered educational methods and the promotion of humanistic care. Wilkerson has received numerous medical education and teaching awards, including the national Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the AAMC and the AOA Honor Medical Society in 2011, the Daniel C. Tosteson Award for Leadership in Medical Education from the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School in 2006 and the Merrill Flair Award for outstanding contributions to the field of medical education from the AAMC Group on Educational Affairs in 2005.

Prior to coming to Dell Medical School, Wilkerson was senior associate dean for medical education and director of the Center for Educational Development & Research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Earlier in her career, she served as the director of faculty development at Harvard Medical School, where she contributed to the design, implementation and evaluation of the New Pathway curriculum, including development of a teaching portfolio for the promotion of clinician-educators.

Moving From Medical Education to Medical Behavior: Insights From Behavioral Economics

David A. Asch, MD, MBA, is executive director of the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation. He is the John Morgan Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He practices internal medicine at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he created and directed from 2001 to 2012 the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion. From 1998 to 2012, he served as executive director of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. His research is in the area of behavioral economics. He aims to understand and improve how physicians and patients make medical choices. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and he has received awards for teaching, mentorship and scholarship.
